Project Willow

Commissioned public sculpture in China by three alumni inspires spirit of giving

Project Willow

To celebrate its 120th anniversary, the Chinese manufacturer of specialty sauces, Lee Kum Kee, decided to commission a public sculpture as a gift to their employees and community to be installed outside the company headquarters in Guangdong Province, southeastern China. The company sought a group of young artists who could capture for this meaningful occasion a work of art that evokes a sense of gratitude and giving back, human values that transcend cultural and social boundaries.

Impressed with the work of Brian Lee (BFA ’08), a family member who at the time was studying furniture design at MCAD, the company chose Lee along with Nate Moren (BFA ’08) and Erin Hickel (BFA ’07) for the commission. Begun in 2006 while all three were students, “Project Willow” was soon underway with the conceptual design, planning and construction of components for the sculpture done on the MCAD campus. The completed work, installed earlier this year, is comprised of three gigantic arms pivoting around a base, each contingent on the other to achieve and thereby symbolize equilibrium—the heart of the spirit of giving back and supporting others.

This was a great adventure for the artists. Thanks to Eddy and Agnes Lee for the amazing opportunity for the 3 artists and their families. The trip to Hong Kong and China to see the installation of the sculpture "Willow" was an experience of a lifetime!!! Thank you for this wonderful bringing together of 3 families in the interest of giving back!!!!! What a beautiful sculpture with all of it's meaning and the building of friendships and cooperation. The hard work and experience of 3 years of planning and hard work was all rewarded in this trip together for the installation and celebration. The impact of the Minneapolis College of Art and Design (MCAD) was also a part of this sculpture "Willow" and it's development as using the studios, the shops and the teacher encouragement, all provided the reality and the completion of this sculpture. Thanks for the great memory and the proud moment for Brian, Nate and Erin!!!! and their families. The experience and the family connections are something to hold in our hearts forever!!!!!
